Hiking is a great way to get fit and enjoy the great outdoors.2014 New Balance Trainers Depending on your route and terrain, it can be relaxing or even extremely challenging. But before you head off into the woods in your favorite pair of Nike's, think about the kind of ground you're going to be covering. Sticks and stones may break your bones (and your feet) if you're not careful. Protect yourself by investing in a pair of good quality hiking boots.
When it comes to hiking boots, always go with the best quality pair that fits your budget. Low-quality boots or boots that aren't fitted correctly can cause bruising, blisters, or more serious injuries like broken ankles and puncture wounds from ground debris.
Before you head to the store, make a few preparations. First of all, go for a walk. Feet change shape as you walk and tend to swell towards the end of the day. Also, wear the socks you're planning on hiking in to the store. This will mimic the condition of your feet during your hike and will result in a better fit.
There are different types of boots designed especially for various ground conditions. If the area you hike in is generally wet, look for boots that are water-resistant with treads that don't slip on slick surfaces. If you're hiking on particularly rough ground, look for a pair with very thick soles that also provide side protection. Side protection will keep sharp sticks or rocks from poking through your boots and injuring your feet.
Your shoe size will not necessarily be the correct boot size for you, but it's a good place to start. Try one size larger and one size smaller to check which size feels best. You should be able to fit a finger behind your heel before you lace up. If you can't, get a larger size. Lace the boots and walk around the store for a few minutes to see which size feels best. Your heel should not lift off the bottom of the boot when you walk. Your foot should fit comfortably into the boot with room to wiggle your toes.
Don't forget that when hiking, you will likely be carrying extra weight. Bring your hiking gear with you in a pack, or carry something of similar weight while you walk around the store to get a better idea of how the boots will feel when you're carrying a full load.
Once you've found the perfect pair of boots, put them to good use and enjoy your hike!
